Computers are occupying much of our life today. Right from storing a written data and small calculations, to social media networking, we need computers for. Though, at the time when they were newly invented, they were of the size of a big room, today’s computers can be of size of a palm, and with their integrated circuits are billion times more competent than their forefathers. Today, computers come in various forms, such as, a mobile device (also called a handheld computer, handheld device or just handheld) which is a palm-sized computer, having a screen with touch input with or without a tiny keyboard. A PDA or personal digital assistant has the input and output often put together into a touch-screen. EDA or enterprise digital assistant is an extension of PDA and is used for wider applications of data capture. The embedded computers are the computing systems which have one or more functions to perform and are fixed into smaller to larger devices like digital watches, MP3 players, factory controllers, traffic lights, toys and industrial robots and even the controlling systems of fighter aircrafts and nuclear power plants. For a household whose expectations from a computer, are not more than storing some necessary documents and getting connected to family members and friends through e-mails, a personal computer with internet connection is ideal. On the other hand time-sharing computers are those, which are to be used by a number of users for multi-tasking at the same time, are usually used in organizations.
A personal computer too is of various types, like a laptop, a desktop computer, a handheld PC or a tablet PC. The software applications in personal computers include word processor, spreadsheets, Web browsers and email clients, databases, games and so on.
A workstation is a personal computer made for scientific or technical applications. Initially they are made for the use of one person at a time, now they are commonly made connected to the LAN i.e. local area network and used by multi-users. Workstations are used for computer-aided design, computation-intensive scientific and engineering calculations, drafting and modeling, image processing, computer graphics for animation, architectural modeling, and motion picture visual effects.
Before the popularity of PCs was increased, the computers used to be small and could fit on a desk and were and are called the desktop computers. They come in various forms from tower case to small form factor models.
A single unit PC or all-in-one PC is a subtype of desktop computer, in which the monitor is combined with the case of computer making it a single unit. Often touch-screen is used as input option, though separate keyboards and mice are also included in some.
Another subtype of desktop is a nettop, introduced by Intel and is described as low-cost and lean-function desktop computer. Same type of subtype of laptop is a netbook. These consume less energy and can be built in small cases.
A tablet PC is a slate-shaped mobile computer, first introduced by Pen computing and then popularized by Microsoft, and has the touchscreen or graphics tablets/screen hybrid technology that lets the user operate the computer with a digital pen or stylus or even a fingertip, in place of a keyboard or a mouse. A tablet PC is wonderful to use where the normal notebooks become impractical and can’t give the required functionality. It has been further progressed towards the Microsoft Courier, a business device, which has two seven-inch monitors which provide multi-touch gestures, Wi-Fi facilities and a built-in camera. They are like traditional planners, but far more advanced in that they provide two pages and a large writing space.
The laptop is a computer with a purpose of mobility. The hardware needed to operate it, like the USB ports, sound channel, graphics card etc. are comprised in a single unit. They contain high-powered batteries which enable the device to work for long period of time and enhance portability. The batteries can be recharged.
A full-size laptop is eleven inches across allowing the full-size keyboard. A netbook is a smaller, lighter version of laptops. Ultra-thin laptop is a newer version which is very, very thin and lightweight. Tablet PC is also an advanced version of laptop. A rugged laptop is also there which has been made for operating in tough conditions.
